Flashback is a ’56 Ford F100 panel modified stock truck. It’s Dad’s pride and joy. The truck is, in a word, “sweet.” She’s celebrating her fiftieth birthday this year.

Saturday was beautiful and Dad asked me if I wanted to go to a Show and Shine with him in Fernley. We stopped for breakfast at Mary & Moe’s Wigwam Restaurant-Casino. If, when they say “We Have It All,” they mean new machines and an Indian museum, then they do have it all. And a place to park your wigwam, as well.

The event was taking place at Out Of Town Park. Some participants were confused and initially ended up at In Town Park. Fernley has a no nonsense way of naming things. Although the sign shows pine trees, there are actually none in the park, so you can’t fault Fernley for having a total lack of imagination.

Out Of Town Park is bordered on one side by a dilapidated barn with horses and cows. This picture is why I love Nevada. Everywhere you can see reminders you are in the true Old West. I think this state is so beautiful in all of its manifestations.

On the other side of the park is Highway 50, called “The Loneliest Road In America” by Life Magazine. This particular stretch is called “The Widowmaker’ because it has the highest number of highway fatalities in Nevada. Well, maybe this part of Nevada isn’t so beautiful.

As Cinderella and Her Ugly Stepbrothers played Oldies, I walked around to check things out. People put a lot of creative effort into showing their shiny cars. This was one of my favorites: American flag, drive-in movie speaker, and a little doll peeing/crying/playing hide-and-seek (?) in front.

I couldn’t believe the size of the trunk on this car. You could easily fit five bodies in it, seven if rigor mortis hasn’t set in. I’m just mentioning this because of the whole Las Vegas/Mafia thing.

Dad and Flashback won a honkin’ big trophy for “People’s Choice” and a nice plaque for “Best In Class.” I don’t drive, but I sure love this car and I love hanging out with Dad. It was a really wonderful Saturday.

I can’t wait to go to the my next Show and Shine with Dad and Flashback.

Happy birthday, ol’ girl! You’re looking great and the People all love you. You are, after all, their preferred choice of shiny vintage cars.
